Terms of Service

Last updated: April 2026

1. Acceptance

By creating an account or submitting an entry on Afrobabel, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the platform.

2. Who may participate

The competition is open to anyone who can write in one of the eligible Zambian languages. There is no minimum age, but contributors under 18 should have parental consent before participating.

Employees of Afrobabel Foundation and their immediate family members are not eligible to win prizes but may contribute to the corpus.

3. Submission requirements

  • Submissions must be original work authored by you.
  • You must hold all rights to the submitted text.
  • Submissions must be in one of the eligible languages for the competition.
  • Submissions must not contain hate speech, incitement to violence, sexual content involving minors, or content that violates Zambian law.
  • Each contributor may submit up to one entry per category per competition.

4. Licence and corpus rights

By accepting the contributor consent agreement at submission time, you grant Afrobabel Foundation a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable licence to include your submission in the Afrobabel open training corpus under CC-BY-SA-4.0.

You retain copyright in your work. The CC-BY-SA-4.0 licence requires that anyone who builds on the corpus credits the original contributors (by attribution name) and releases derivative works under the same licence.

The exact consent text you agreed to is stored permanently on your submission record. Different competition rounds may use updated consent versions — you will always see the current version before submitting.

5. Review process

All submitted entries are reviewed by a panel of trained reviewers before entering the corpus. Reviewers may flag submissions that violate these terms. Flagged submissions are reviewed by an admin and may be excluded from the corpus.

Review decisions are final for corpus inclusion purposes. Flagged submissions do not disqualify you from future competitions.

6. Competition prizes

Prizes (where offered) are awarded at Afrobabel's sole discretion. Prize details are published on the competition page before submissions open. Afrobabel reserves the right to withhold prizes if the winning submission is found to violate these terms after judging.

7. Account conduct

  • You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials.
  • You may not create multiple accounts to circumvent per-account submission limits.
  • You may not use automated tools to create submissions without explicit permission from Afrobabel.

8. Termination

Afrobabel may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, at our discretion. If your account is terminated, submissions already incorporated into a published corpus release will remain (see Section 4).

9. Limitation of liability

Afrobabel provides the platform “as is” without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by Zambian law, Afrobabel is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the platform.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Zambia. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Lusaka, Zambia.

11. Changes

We may update these terms. Registered users will be notified by email before material changes take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
